Abstract
The possibility of creating a layered structure with mobile borders is proposed on the basis of crystals with the property of cleavage. The properties of electromagnetic waves localized in the vicinity of the i ntermediate layer of this structure have been considered. It has been shown that both in the waveguide regime and in the surface polariton m ode of propagation, the phase of the outgoing wave becomes modulated. The phenomena mentioned here allow the value of the refractive index o f many liquids to be determined with great accuracy. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A.
