Am. Kalinina et Lv. Chazova, EFFECT OF MULTIFACTORIAL PREVENTION OF CA RDIOVASCULAR-DISEASE ON LIFETIME PREDICTION - A 10-YEAR FOLLOW-UP, Terapevticeskij arhiv, 70(1), 1998, pp. 8-12
Aim. Assessment of the probability of decreasing cardiovascular mortal
ity by detecting and treating coronary patients and patients with arte
rial hypertension and correcting the risk factors. Materials and Metho
ds. A prospective ten-year registration of the mortality of the male p
opulation aged 40 to 59 years was carried out at a Moscow territory wi
th two health centers. The subjects were routinely screened for corona
ry disease, arterial hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, excess body w
eight, tobacco smoking, insufficient exercise. During the first five y
ears of the follow-up they were involved in treatment and prophylaxis
measures varying in activity and direction (the two health centers wer
e specialized in prevention and common treatment). Conclusion. Multifa
ctorial prophylactic intervention helped delay untimely death in all t
he population examined, mainly due to detection of cardiovascular dise
ases. The life prognosis was improved most appreciably in the cases wh
en the levels of risk factors were decreased due to multifactorial pre
vention in comparison with the life prognosis for subjects with a simi
lar decrease of risk factors but without prophylactic intervention.
