Camponotus terebrans (Lowne) of the subfamily Formicinae is reviewed w
ith the aid of both morphological and allozyme techniques. C. testacei
pes (Smith) and C. darlingtoni Wheeler are previously recognised synon
yms while C. latrunculus victoriensis Santschi and C. myoporus Clark a
re newly proposed synonyms. C. darlingtoni is removed from synonymy an
d its lectotype is designated. Although considerable variation has bee
n recognised in this species, this variation is considered to be clina
l. A description of this variable species and its known distribution i
s presented. Examples of its habitat preferences and behaviour are als
o included.
