Wave properties of synchrotron radiation (SR) emitted in a bending mag
net are analyzed. Starting from exact solutions of the Maxwell equatio
ns for the electromagnetic field of the particle in motion, precise an
alytic expression for the SR phase distribution has been obtained. Thi
s distribution is compared with the phase distribution of radiation em
itted by a point source, being at rest in the laboratory frame. Strict
ly speaking, the SR phase distribution over the entire area cannot pre
cisely coincide with that of an immobile point source. Nevertheless, t
he carried-out calculations showed that they practically coincide with
in a rather large entrance window area. The theoretical results obtain
ed will allow to accurately describe the SR wave properties. In partic
ular, they may find applications in the SR diagnostics.
