In this paper we obtain the general analytical solution corresponding
to the response of a reversible charge transfer reaction to the applic
ation of any sequence of potential steps to a static mercury drop elec
trode. This solution is applicable when the amalgamation takes place a
s well as when the product is soluble in the electrolytic solution, an
d independently of whether the redox couple diffusion coefficients are
equal or not. The influence of amalgamation on the response correspon
ding to cyclic staircase voltammetry, stripping cyclic staircase volta
mmetry, cyclic square wave voltammetry and stripping cyclic square wav
e voltammetry is discussed.
