Abstract
The optimal conditions for separating multi-jet events from background events in particle physics are examined. It is shown that the maximal information about such events is not always obtained with the standar d application of jet-resolution parameters. A modified criterion is pr oposed and a new extrapolation method is introduced. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
