Abstract
Metabolic engineering is a rapidly evolving field. The term typically refers to the genetic modification of cellular biochemistry to introdu ce new properties or modify existing ones. Recent progress in genetics , molecular biology, microbiology and chemistry are driving advances i n this field. Many well-studied areas continue to yield exciting resul ts and new problems and technologies are constantly being developed.
