Abstract
The authors present a self-aligning 1 x 12 and a 1 x 24 optical switch based on the translation past each other of two halves of a silica op tical circuit of straight waveguides mounted on a common base. The swi tch features an insertion loss of 0.2dB, repeatability of 0.05dB and p olarisation and wavelength independence.
