Jl. Cummings et al., THE CLINICIAN-SCIENTIST IN NEUROPSYCHIATRY - A POSITION STATEMENT FROM THE COMMITTEE ON RESEARCH OF THE AMERICAN-NEUROPSYCHIATRIC-ASSOCIATION, The Journal of neuropsychiatry and clinical neurosciences, 10(1), 1998, pp. 1-9
Neuropsychiatric research seeks to improve the lives of patients with
brain-based behavioral disturbances. There has been dramatic progress
in diagnosis and treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders, and progress
in neuroscience and biotechnology promises further success. Paradoxic
ally recent trends threaten to erode this progress. In this environmen
t, neuropsychiatric clinician-scientists must advocate for the importa
nce of research. This position statement defines neuropsychiatric rese
arch, describes current challenges to the neuropsychiatric clinician-s
cientist, summarizes research opportunities, describes how future neur
opsychiatric clinician-investigators should be trained, and makes reco
mmendations for promoting neuropsychiatric research.
