The ionic product of water, pK(w) = -log[H+][OH-] has been determined
in aqueous solutions of tetramethylammonium chloride over the concentr
ation range of 0.1-5.5 M at 25 degrees C using high-precision glass el
ectrode potentiometric titrations. pK(w) data relating to aqueous pota
ssium and sodium chlorides at ionic strengths up to 5 M are markedly l
ower than the tetramethylammonium chloride results. These differences
are almost certainly due to weak associations between potassium and (e
specially) sodium and hydroxide ions. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.
