Recently, new approaches for location of a target in nonoverlapping no
ise, which are optimal in the maximum-likelihood sense, have been prop
osed. In particular, different methods for deterministic or fluctuatin
g targets have been developed. We propose a unified and optimal proces
sor for a target with either known or unknown gray levels. We demonstr
ate the efficiency and robustness of this method in comparison with pr
