Abstract
Recently, new approaches for location of a target in nonoverlapping no ise, which are optimal in the maximum-likelihood sense, have been prop osed. In particular, different methods for deterministic or fluctuatin g targets have been developed. We propose a unified and optimal proces sor for a target with either known or unknown gray levels. We demonstr ate the efficiency and robustness of this method in comparison with pr eviously developed processors. (C) 1998 Optical Society of America.
