The results of basic works dealing with the effect of high-dose ion im
plantation on the tribological and fatigue properties of metals are pr
esented in this brief review. Tendencies resulting in an improvement o
f the above-mentioned properties of metals are considered. A formation
of layered structures in the modified, near-surface layer is generall
y demonstrated. Most attention is paid to the implantation of light io
ns (B, C, N) into iron and titanium (and Fe- and Ti-based alloys), as
well as to combined implantation (Ti + C). In addition, properties rel
ating to metal-ion implantation (Ti, Al) are also considered. (C) 1998
