Colourless sometimes pale blue crystals of (NH4)(2)[Nb3O5Cl7] are prep
ared in silica tubes from a mixture of NbCl5, NH4Cl and As2O3 at 1050
K (NH4)(2)L[Nb3O5Cl7] crystallizes in space group C2/c with Z=4. The l
attice constants at 293 K are a = 1680.6(8) pm, b=886.6(1) pm, c=1104.
3(5) pm and beta=111.35(2)degrees. The structure consists of layers of
[(Nb3O5Cl7)(2-)](infinity)(2). Within a layer the niobium centered oc
tahedra are corner sharing. The structure of the anion shows a new kin
d of octahedral connectivity for a layered MX4-structure. The ammonium
ions are located in between the polyanionic layers.
