R. Pippan et P. Weinert, THE EFFECTIVE THRESHOLD OF FATIGUE-CRACK PROPAGATION IN ALUMINUM-ALLOYS II - THE INFLUENCE OF PARTICLE REINFORCEMENT, Philosophical magazine. A. Physics of condensed matter. Structure, defects and mechanical properties, 77(4), 1998, pp. 875-886
The threshold of effective stress intensity range Delta K-eff th of al
uminium alloy 6061 and a 16 vol.% and a 21 vol.% Al2O3-particle-reinfo
rced aluminium alloy was investigated. In the near-threshold regime th
e fatigue crack propagates predominately in the aluminium matrix, but
the effective threshold Delta K-eff th increases with increasing parti
cle content. The main reason for this increase in Delta K-eff th is th
e reduction in the local crack driving force at the crack tip in the a
luminium matrix due to increase in Young's modulus of the surrounding
composite.
