The absorption properties and the refractive index change of an electr
oabsorption modulator were determined directly in the waveguide config
uration by evaluation of the modulation depth and the shift of Fabry-P
erot modes. The shift direction indicates the sign of the chirp parame
ter. Chirp compensation is demonstrated with a two-section modulator.
