The wear resistance mechanisms of a silicon carbide (SiC) paticulate r
einforced Al-Li alloy composite at 250 degrees C by a pyramidal indent
er have been studied. It is found that the subsurface damages that con
trol the weal-resistance are: generation of dislocations and cracks in
the SiC particles, interface debonding between matrix and reinforceme
nts and plastic deformation of the matrix. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S
