Charcoal-supported Pd-Pt catalysts based on Pd-Pt/NOct(4)Cl colloidal
alloys have superior activity and selectivity in the oxidation of gluc
ose to gluconic acid compared with industrial heterogeneous Pd-Pt cata
lysts. According to transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffractio
n/Debye function analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray abs
orption near edge structure, and extended X-ray absorption fine struct
ure analysis the chemical coreduction of PdCl2 and PtCl2 in the approp
riate ratio with NOct(4)BEt(3)H yielded the alloyed Pd-Pt colloids in
organic solvents. They are screened by the lipophilic NOct(4)Cl surfac
tant layer from coagulation and poisoning. TEM showed colloids of part
icle sizes in the range from 1.5 to 3 nm. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.
