Micellar solutions of the cationic surfactant 1-bromo-4-tridecylpyridi
ne in water and sodium bromide-water were studied by small-angle neutr
on scattering. The data were modelled for two-shell ellipsoids with a
screening Coulomb potential. The dependences of micellar aggregation n
umber, fractional charge, electrical charge and surface Coulomb potent
ial on surfactant concentration, ionic strength of the solution and te
mperature were obtained. The micellar electrical charge decreases with
increasing ionic strength of the solution but does not change with in
creasing temperature. The changes in the Gibbs free energy and the val
ue of surface tension of the micellar surface (similar to 0.5 mN m(-1)
) were determined. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.
