The study examined the relationships among ethnicity, idiocentrism-all
ocentrism and intergroup attitudes in Singapore. Thirty Malay and 30 C
hinese students completed questionnaires which measured in-group and o
ut-group attitudes and attitudes toward ethnic-based community develop
ment groups. Intergroup attitudes were analyzed by a 2 x 2 x 2 (Subjec
t Ethnicity x Target Group Ethnicity x Idiocentrism-Allocentrism) anal
ysis of variance. A 2 x 2 interaction revealed that both Malay and Chi
nese subjects expressed ethnocentric biases; however, planned comparis
ons indicated that this was due to the responses of allocentrics. A se
parate 2 x 2 (Subject Ethnicity x Idiocentrism-Allocentrism) ANOVA fur
ther revealed that allocentrics had more favorable attitudes toward et
hnic-based community development groups than did idiocentrics.
