H. Djidjelli et D. Benachour, EFFECTS OF RECYCLING ON MECHANICAL AND THERMAL-PROPERTIES OF POLYSTYRENE, Macromolecular symposia, 127, 1998, pp. 181-185
A commercial Polystyrene (M-w =2.5 10(5), MFI =14.80) was extruded rep
eatedly from one to eight times at 190 degrees C. The effects of extru
sion process on physical and chemical properties of polystyrene were i
nvestigated using: Average molecular weight Izod Impact strength; Ther
mal properties (TGA, DTA). The results showed that processing of polys
tyrene leads to degradation. In fact, a decrease of 23% in the average
molecular weight was observed for the 8(th) cycle sample and a reduct
ion in impact strength by 34% was also noticed for the 4(th) cycle sam
ple.
