In the present work the flow of the metal in the radial extrusion of t
ubular components is analysed. Different strain-hardening behaviours a
re used in a commercially-available finite-element code, giving remark
ably different flow behaviour of the metal. The finite-element simulat
ions are verified by metal experiments. The creation of unsound compon
ents is explained from the flow behaviour of the metal due to an inhom
ogeneous flow followed by a difference in the strain hardening of diff
erent regions of the component. Based On. the results obtained the fea
tures in producing sound radial extruded components are reviewed. (C)
