A new aromatic diterpene has been isolated from the leaves of Salvia c
hinopeplica and its structure established on the basis of spectral dat
a as 19-hydroxy-royleanone. The known diterpenes carnosol, 16-hydroxy-
carnosol, 16-hydroxy-20-deoxo-carnosol, 16-hydroxy-carnosic acid, 16-h
ydroxy ferruginol, 7 alpha-methoxy-rosmanol and ydroxy-20-nor-abietan-
5(10),8,11,13-tetraen-1-one, as well as ursolic acid and the flavonoid
s velutin, salvigenin and 3,5-dihydroxy-7,4'-dimethoxy-flavone were al
so isolated from the same source. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All r
