Abstract
Analysis of genetic mutations that lead to abnormal migration and laye r formation in the developing cerebral cortex of mice and humans has l ed to important new discoveries regarding the molecular mechanisms tha t underlie these processes. Genetic manipulation and experimental anal ysis have demonstrated significant tangential migrations of cortical n eurons, some arriving from very distant noncortical sites.
