In this paper, we present experimental findings on the synthesis and c
haracterization of novel condensation of activated aromatic dinitro co
mpounds containing preformed benzimidazole units and 1,6-hexandiol in
N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP). These polymers were obtained in high to qua
ntitative yields and with varying molecular weights (inherent viscosit
ies from 0.43 to 0.77 dL/g), which in some cases were in the fiber for
ming range. They show high thermal stability, decompose above 400 degr
ees C and have glass transition temperatures in the 240-300 degrees C
range.
