Excess molar volumes, V-E, have been claculated from the density data
of aqueous solutions of I-propanol, 2-propanol, allyl alcohol and prop
argyl alcohol at temperatures ranging from 30 degrees-50 degrees C. Th
e V-E values have been found to be negative at all temperatures. The v
olume contraction for saturated alcohols, both straight and branched c
hain, in aqueous media is accounted for mainly by the hydrophobic effe
ct, while that for unsaturated alcohols is explained primarily by the
formation of H-bond between the alcohol and water. The dV(E)/dT values
have been found to be positive for all alcohols. The temperature depe
ndence of V-E is thought to be strongly influenced by the structural p
roperties of water.
