The well established free space radiation mode (FSRM) method is extend
ed to the analysis of dielectric waveguide discontinuities and propaga
tion in fully three dimensional structures. Unlike beam propagation me
thods (BPM) the method intrinsically incorporates continuous reflectio
ns and is inherently wide angled in nature. Results are given fora. re
presentative selection of practical structures, such as single and dou
ble step discontinuities and tapers, for both TE and TM polarisations.
The method is computationally efficient with minimal memory requireme
nts.
