Double-differential cross sections of the Pb-208(n,p) reaction have be
en measured at 97 MeV in the angular range 0 degrees-30 degrees for ex
citation energies up to 40 MeV. The experimental proton spectra have b
een compared with calculated spectra obtained with a statistical multi
step direct reaction theory, in which charge exchange and inelastic re
sponse functions are described microscopically in the quasiparticle ra
ndom phase approximation. The direct parts of the spectra have also be
en distributed on different multipole components by using a decomposit
ion technique, based on sample angular distributions calculated within
