Im. Madany et Ka. Bugahoos, AN ASSESSMENT OF 6TH, 9TH, AND 12TH GRADE STUDENTS ENVIRONMENTAL KNOWLEDGE IN BAHRAIN, Environment international, 24(3), 1998, pp. 325-330
The present investigation assessed the basic environmental knowledge p
ertinent to the State of Bahrain that the 6th, 9th, and 12th grade stu
dents possess. Eleven public schools representing all grades were sele
cted based on their geographic locations. A total of 973 students were
randomly selected from these schools to participate in the study. The
findings of the investigation showed that environmental knowledge amo
ng the students was generally low. For the entire sample, the females'
environmental knowledge was observed to be significantly higher, and
the 12th graders scared significantly higher than both the 6th and the
9th graders. Students in the Science Branch of the 12th grade outscor
ed the students in other branches. The results of this study indicate
a need for a systematic effort to incorporate environmental components
in the school curriculum in an integrated and comprehensive manner, i
ncluding all students. (C)1998 Elsevier Science Ltd.
