A. Doja, PATRONYMIC INSCRIPTION AND FOUNDATION MYT HOLOGY - ANALYTICAL ELEMENTS FOR A GENEALOGY OF PERSONAL NAMES AMONG ALBANIANS, Anthropos, 93(1-3), 1998, pp. 155-172
In the Albanian tradition, the name reflects both the genealogical lin
eage as well as a territorial membership. The name is transmitted from
generation to generation, especially in the paternal lineage, general
ly in alternated manner. The Albanian nomination system appeals for th
ree elements: the individual name, the individual name of the father,
and a third name (the name of family) of territorial or genealogical r
eference. Albanian anthroponymy appears in the toponymic origin of nam
es. Names of persons inform on the geographical origin of the populati
on, its stability, or ist mobility. The name establishes the connectio
n between the lived space of the group and other ''we,'' dispersed mem
bers of the kinship community. It comprises both a parental (genealogi
cal) and a territorial field, and defines the inscriptions of the marr
iage and modes of affinity.
