The phase diagram of the Lu-In system has been investigated in the ran
ge 25-100 at.% In, using differential thermal analysis, metallographic
analysis, X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. Seven intermedia
te phases have been found: LuIn3 (AuCu3 type), LuIn2 (ZrGa2 type), Lu3
In5 (Tm3Ga5 type), LuIn (AuCu type), Lu5In4 (Ti5Ga4 type), Lu5In3 (Mn5
Si3 type) and Lu2In (Ni2In type). Some of them were already known, whi
le the existence of new phases recently discovered has been confirmed.
Lu5In3 and Lu5In4 give rise to a continuous solid solution range as-t
hey occur in the Zr-Sn system between Zr5Sn3 and Zr5S4. At least three
eutectics occur at about 23 at.% In and 1185 degrees C, 58 at.% In an
d 960 degrees C, less than 1 at.% In and 156 degrees C. (C) 1998 Elsev
