NOVEL OLEANENE SAPONINS FROM TAVERNIERA-AEGYPTIACA BOISS

From the root bark of Taverniera aegyptiaca, a new pentacyclic triterp ene aglycone having the structure 20 alpha-carboxy methyl oleanolate 5 labeled the name 28-methyl serratagenate was isolated from the acid h ydrolysis of the novel saponins: 28-methyl serratagenate 3-beta-O-beta D xylopyranosyl 29-beta-D-xylopyranosyl ester (1), 28-methyl serratag enate 3-beta-O-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl 29-beta-D-xylopyranosyl ester ( 2), 28-methyl serratagenate 3-beta-O-beta-D xylopyranosyl 29-beta-D-gl ucopyranosyl ester (3) and 28-methyl serratagenate 3-beta-O-alpha-L rh amnopyranosyl 29-beta-D-glucopyranosyl ester (4). The structure of the se compounds were elucidated on the basis of chemical and spectral evi dences.
