Abstract
Posttranslational processing is essential for the biological activatio n of many peptide hormones, Only fully processed and amidated gastrin, a peptide secreted by the stomach, stimulates acid secretion. However , both amidated gastrin and ifs glycine-extended precursor stimulate c ellular proliferation through selective receptors, suggesting that pos ttranslational processing is critical to gastrointestinal physiology.
