Residues obtainable from rice bran fatty acid distillation have been p
repared. The high yield and unsaponifiable matter content of such resi
dues (obtained by fat splitting and vacuum distillation) have been att
ributed to waxes and those esters of phytosterols which are present in
crude oil as ferulates and alkanoates. Additionally, a dry extraction
technique has been developed to conveniently extract the unsaponifiab
les from these residues. Preliminary investigations into the saponifia
ble portion of the residue indicated that apart from oxidized/polymeri
zed materials, it also contained a good proportion of fatty acids with
a high lignoceric acid content.
