This report is the result of a study by The Warren Centre ibr Advanced
Engineering at The University of Sydney of the potential of undergrou
nd space use to create and maintain more liveable cities in Australia
and the role that advanced technologies could play in assisting the ef
fective use of underground space. The study was conducted from mid 199
5 to mid-1996 and involved more than 100 participants from a variety o
f professional disciplines in industry, academia and government. Ten w
orking groups were convened to study and report on the following topic
s: strategic planning; environmental implications; planning issues; ca
se studies in Australia and overseas; transport; financing; legal aspe
cts; geotechnical aspects; underground technology; and research and de
velopment. This paper summarizes the results of the study. (C) 1998 El
