Rb. Gherman et al., SYMPHYSEAL SEPARATION AND TRANSIENT FEMORAL NEUROPATHY ASSOCIATED WITH THE MCROBERTS MANEUVER, American journal of obstetrics and gynecology, 178(3), 1998, pp. 609-610
Many authors have recommended the McRoberts' maneuver as the initial t
echnique in the management of shoulder dystocia. There have been, howe
ver, no reported adverse maternal outcomes associated with this techni
que. We report a case of symphyseal separation and transient femoral n
europathy associated with the McRoberts' maneuver. An overly exaggerat
ed lithotomy position and thigh abduction stretches the articular surf
aces of the symphysis pubis and places increased pressure on the femor
al nerve by the overlying inguinal ligament.
