Abstract
The incoherent inelastic neutron scattering (IINS), Raman and IR absor ption spectra were measured and ab initio calculation studies were per formed on 1,8-bis(dimethylamino)naphthalene (DMAN-proton sponge) and i ts protonated form. The IINS technique appeared to be very effective i n studies of low frequency vibrations into which the methyl and dimeth ylamino groups are involved. Spectacular effects are observed on proto nation of DMAN with respect to the N(CH3)(2) deformation and CH3 torsi onal modes in the range below 300 cm(-1). (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B. V.
