Md. Reisig, RATES OF DISORDER IN HIGHER-CUSTODY STATE PRISONS - A COMPARATIVE-ANALYSIS OF MANAGERIAL PRACTICES, Crime and delinquency, 44(2), 1998, pp. 229-244
Despite the rise of the prison management movement little research has
been conducted assessing the outcomes associated with different manag
erial practices in American prisons. One factor that has slowed the de
velopment of research in this area is the challenge of operationalizin
g the interrelated administrative components that guide prison operati
ons. Using past research as a conceptual base, this study evaluates th
e performance of managerial practices by conducting a series of post h
oc comparisons of subjective levels of disorder. The findings do not s
upport the hypothesis that prisons that adhere to highly formalized ma
nagerial practices are most effective at combating disorder.
