Abstract
We investigate the effect of boundary conditions on the bulk polarizat ion of an electronic ferroelectric. Criteria are established for the e xistence of a spontaneous dipole moment in samples terminated by open- and short-circuited electrodes. It is shown that boundary effects do n ot have a deleterious effect on achieving electronic ferroelectricity. (C) 1998 Academic Press Limited.
