Vesicles were prepared by dilution with water of hydrotrope (sodium xy
lene sulfonate) solutions for a nonionic surfactant Laureth 4 (Brij(R)
30). The results showed the sodium xylene sulfonate (SXS) to solubili
ze the nonionic surfactant to a high degree, 40% by weight, into an is
otropic solution. The vesicle dispersions prepared by dilution contain
ed 3.2% by weight of the nonionic surfactant in equilibrium with an aq
ueous continuous phase of only 0.4% SXS and 0.04% Laureth 4. Their sta
bility was superior to vesicles formed by dispersing the lamellar liqu
id crystal directly.
