Abstract
Linear birefringence behavior of Rb2ZnCl4, K2ZnCl4, and [N(CH3)(4)](2) ZnCl4 were studied in the critical region of the normal-incommensurate phase transition. Existence of linear birefringence tail above the tr ansition temperature was observed. It was ascribed to the fluctuation effect on the linear birefringence. Results of scaling analysis imply that the exponent of LB behavior is not 1 - alpha but 2 beta, contrary to the previous LB study. Contribution of the fluctuation to linear b irefringence behavior is discussed comparing to XRD experiments.
