Hydrophobic organic chemicals are hazardous pollutants because of thei
r toxicity and a strong tendency to concentrate in food chains. Biosor
ption is an important mechanism for the removal of these compounds in
activated sludge systems. Measurement, modelling, thermodynamic and ki
netic aspects of biosorption and the effect of biosorption on the biod
egradation of hydrophobic organic pollutants are discussed in this rev
iew.
