Abstract
Deeply bound Is states of pi(-) as well as the 2p states in Pb-207 wer e identified in the Pb-208(d,He-3) reaction at 600 MeV. The binding en ergies of pi(-) in Pb-207 have been determined as B-pi(2p) = 5.31 +/- 0.09 MeV and B-pi(1s) = 7.1 +/- 0.2 MeV by comparing the observed Q-va lue spectrum with theory. These values indicate Chat the effective pi( -) mass increases by 19.3 +/- 2.7 MeV at the center of the Pb-207 nucl eus. (C) 1998 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.
