Within the framework of the classical approach a study has been undert
aken to the interaction between two atomic dipoles, one of them residi
ng inside a dielectric micro (nano)sphere and the other near its outsi
de surface. Quasi-static approximation analysis of the exact classical
dispersion equation obtained for this system reveals the complicated
dependence of the energy exchange on the problem parameters. In partic
ular, the resonant exchange is only possible for fixed positions of th
e interacting dipoles. In this case the energy exchange rate exceeds s
ubstantially the rate near the plane interface. The results obtained a
re of interest in implementing photoselective microscopy capable of na
nometer-high spatial resolution. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.
