The absorption of NO onto LaBaSrCu2O6-delta is investigated by electro
n energy-loss spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The r
esults suggest that electron transfer from Cu-O planes to absorbed NO
takes place and indicate the formation of chemisorbed states of NO- on
the oxide surface. It is shown that the NO adsorption into the layere
d cuprate is related to the charge-transfer type electron structure of
the cuprates. Also, it is considered that formation of the NO2- group
corresponding to adsorbed NO- trapped by oxygen vacancies on the surf
ace, and subsequent solution of N+ ions play an important role in the
gas-solid reaction between NO and double-layer cuprates.
