Abstract
This article presents the basic concepts of thermoregulation and hyper thermia in horses. The effect of environmental conditions on the dissi pation of metabolic heat and the consequences thereof are discussed. I ndices describing environmental heat load and strategies to acclimatiz e horses that are scheduled to compete under such conditions are also summarized.
