Several compounds of the general formula (NH4)((1-x))HxTiOPO4 . nH(2)O
(x=0.45-0.75) were prepared by acid treatment of ammonium titanyl pho
sphate (NTP) at elevated temperature (80-90 degrees C). The protonic p
hases of the NTP were characterized by elemental analysis, TGA, FT-IR,
MAS P-31 NMR and X-ray diffraction. Their ion exchange behavior towar
ds alkali, alkaline earth and some transition metal ions in pure singl
e ion solutions and mixtures was studied. A high capacity and selectiv
ity for potassium and lead makes it promising for certain types of was
te treatment and selected analytical separations.
