Clinicians in the critical care setting see extensive, severe, and oft
en necrotizing infection, as well as atypical or unusual infection tha
t can be misdiagnosed, resulting in delays in treatment. Greater numbe
rs of immunocompromised patients are at risk for both types of infecti
on. A thorough understanding of various etiologies and presentations o
f these infections is essential, as is the ability to discriminate bet
ween infectious and noninfectious etiologies.
