The molecular weight distribution (MWD) curves for polymerization syst
ems with chain transfer to polymer leading to reshuffling of polymer s
egments (and broadening of the MWD), but not changing chain functional
ities, were simulated by the Monte Carlo method. The bimodality observ
ed in some distributions was explained by different distribution funct
ions of chains which did not undergo reshuffling and of those which un
derwent the chain transfer reaction. Using this observation, a numeric
al integration method for computing (DP)over-bar(w)/<(DP)over-bar>(n),
(and the MWD curves) in the systems under consideration was devised.
Plots relating (DP)over-bar(w)/(DP)over-bar(n) to monomer conversion a
nd k(tr)/k(p), are presented and a method of determination of k(tr)/k(
p), from the (DP)over-bar(w)/(DP)over-bar(n), data is proposed.
