Abstract
Experimental results for the first comparison between membrane bioreac tor and a conventional activated sludge treatment system for the treat ment of CTMP indicate that the membrane bioreactor has superior perfor mance. The mst significant advantages are removal of COD, suspended so lids, and the toxicity of 48 h-LC50 for Daphnia Magna. The lignin amou nt in the membrane bioreactor is higher so the lignin concentration if the permeate was less than that measured in the final effluent of the activated sludge treatment system.
