Octadecylamine is effective as an internal sizing agent when used alon
e, or without alum as a mordant. With unbleached kraft, pulp, 0.25% oc
tadecylamine (on dry pulp) was enough to induce sizing. Bleached kraft
pulp required 0.5% octadecylamine. The sizing efficiency depended on
the temperature, the presence of metallic, ions, and the storage time
of the stock. The optimum pH range was 7-10. paper strength decreased
with the use of octadecylamine. However, cationic starch can be added
to overcome the strength loss.
